Tips for system design interviews as a junior developer

I have 1.5 years of experience and most system design resources seem targeted at senior engineers. The concepts feel overwhelming - distributed systems, CAP theorem, consistent hashing...

For junior/mid level system design interviews, how deep do they actually go? Do I need to know all these concepts or just high level architecture?

Any good resources specifically for SDE-1/SDE-2 level system design? I've been watching some YouTube videos but they seem to cover way more than what's asked.

I was in the same boat last year. I found that practicing mock interviews with a focus on explaining my decisions was key. Cracking the Coding Interview has a chapter on system design too, which is a good start.

When I interviewed for my first job, they were more interested in how I communicated my ideas than if I knew CAP theorem inside-out. I'd suggest focusing on explaining trade-offs and why you'd choose a particular architecture.

Honestly, as a junior, they usually focus more on your thought process and how you approach a problem rather than deep technical details. Understanding basic concepts like load balancing and database sharding can be really helpful though.

For SDE-1 and SDE-2, they usually won't expect deep dives into distributed systems. It's more about knowing how to scale a simple web app or handle bottlenecks. I found some podcasts that break down these topics in a digestible way, which was super helpful.
