I'm 35 and still an IC. Should I be worried?

See the title. 12 years of experience, still a senior engineer. Haven't moved to management and don't particularly want to.

But I notice most people my age are Engineering Managers or Directors. Am I falling behind? Is there an age bias against older ICs in the Indian tech industry?

I still enjoy coding and solving technical problems. But the constant pressure to "grow into management" is exhausting.

In my experience, the tech industry still values top-notch ICs. Companies need great engineers to stay innovative. Keep honing your skills, and you'll remain in demand.

Have you considered hybrid roles? Some companies offer positions that let you stay technical while mentoring junior engineers.

Hey Smriti, it's totally normal to feel this way, but being an IC is a valid career path! Not everyone is cut out for management, and some people are happier and more productive in their technical roles.

I think it really depends on what you enjoy and value. I've seen amazing ICs who are well-respected and earn as much or more than some managers. If you love coding, maybe that's where you should stay.
