How to negotiate notice period buyout?

My current company has a 90-day notice period but the new company wants me to join in 30 days.

Options I'm considering:

  1. Ask current employer for early release
  2. Ask new employer to buy out the notice period
  3. Negotiate with both sides for 45-day compromise

Has anyone successfully negotiated a notice period buyout? How does it usually work — does the new company reimburse you or is it adjusted against your CTC?

Also, what's the legal standing if I just abscond? (not planning to, just curious)

I've heard of people who've just absconded, but it can seriously damage your reputation. Even if legally you might not face action, HR networks are tight. If you want a less risky option, maybe see if you can use accrued vacation days to cover part of the notice?

Hey Lakshay, in my last job switch, I managed to negotiate a reduced notice period by promising to train someone quickly. The new company agreed to pay for the buyout and handled it directly with HR. It was deducted from my signing bonus though. Have you checked if your new employer's flexible with signing bonuses for such situations?
