Got lowballed by Amazon - how to counter?

Amazon offered me SDE-1 role but the offer is lower than what my friends got for the same role 6 months ago. The base is fine but the signing bonus and RSU vesting schedule is back-loaded (5/15/40/40).

This means year 1-2 compensation is significantly lower. Is there room to negotiate the signing bonus? Or should I push for a higher base?

I have another offer from a startup at comparable total comp but front-loaded. Can I use that as leverage?

Would it make sense to ask them to match the comp from 6 months ago citing inflation and cost of living increases? Or does that not work with big tech?

I've heard Amazon is usually pretty fixed on base salaries, but you might have better luck negotiating the signing bonus. Definitely mention the other offer you have; it shows you have options!

I was in a similar situation last year. I managed to get a better signing bonus by explaining my concerns about the back-loaded RSU schedule. Be honest about what you need in terms of compensation.

Honestly, the vesting schedule is quite common at Amazon, but you should definitely ask if they could front-load the bonus. Worst case, they say no!

The startup offer could be a good leverage point, particularly if they are front-loading comp. Be sure to highlight any difference in responsibilities or opportunities for growth at Amazon vs. the startup.
